Will Powell confirmed in McLaren for British GT4 campaign

Championship debutants Lines and Powell team up aboard McLaren 570S GT4

Season 30’s entry process officially opens today

Stewart Lines and Will Powell will contest the 2022 Intelligent Money British GT Championship in a Maximum Networks backed McLaren 570S GT4.

The GT4 Pro-Am pairing will race under the new ‘Maximum Networks with Motus One’ team banner.

The announcement comes on the same day as SRO Motorsports Group officially opens the entry process for next season’s British GT Championship, which hits the big three-zero in 2022.

Motus One professional driver Powell is the reigning Britcar Endurance champion and a former development driver for Brabham Automotive in Australia. He also raced a Maximum Motorsport-prepared Hyundai i30N TCR in this year’s Touring Car Trophy.

Meanwhile, Lines – the Ginetta GT4 Supercup Am class champion in 2020 – will fully focus on GT racing for the first time following previous spells in the BTCC and VW Racing Cup, as well as several one-off Britcar appearances last season.

The GT4 programme also dovetails with TCR UK, which is owned and operated by Lines’ Maximum Motorsport company and shares its opening two rounds with British GT.

“It’s great to be able to promote Maximum Networks, which specialises in providing business telecoms services, to a new British GT audience and I believe we will be a competitive entry against the young guns in GT4,” said Lines. “The fact that TCR UK is now supporting the championship is the ideal alignment of business interests to make racing here a viable option. I’m looking forward to the season.”

Powell added: “I’m delighted we’ve been able to put a full-season entry together at the highest level of GT racing in the UK. Stewart and I have often talked about teaming up. Our racing and business commitments have finally aligned for 2022, so now is the time. The team will be working hard over the winter to give us a competitive GT4 car from the off next season.”

Oulton Park hosts the opening round of next season’s Intelligent Money British GT Championship on April 16-18.
